A Time Lapse

Another part of my workload for the short film project 'Launch Date' was to create a representative time lapse of our rocket being built.

This process consisted of getting an image of a crane that is straight out of the period, creating an animation for a calendar which I created in Photoshop, making the rocket look like it was constructed stage by stage over a couple of seasons and adding an effect of snow/ winter to one of the lapse images.

This is the crane that was chosen. Using the select and mask tool I was able to extract the majority of what was needed. Given more time I would make a better job of removing the unwanted areas, luckily the tone isn't too distracting in the actual finished project.

This is the calendar design I made using Photoshop for the simple year and month. Using After Effects I created the effect of the pages falling away. The black background was removed by selecting the screen blending mode.

Below are the images used for the stages of the lapse followed by the base video which was created in Premiere Pro. Using Photoshop I was able to add an effect of winter. I have used a number of developing skills to create this time lapse, it has been fun and frustrating yet rewarding.

In the final edit I will be adding filters to give more of an aged feel. As a 'quick' time lapse video I am happy with the end result, with more time there a some things I would refine such as the crane, the lighting and the positioning of the items in the video.
