For our short film, I am not only the VFX guy I am also the designated sound designer. This has included sourcing all the sounds for the VFX (rocket and photo album montage) and recording the sound on set.
This is the gear I used, 2x Sony headphones, 2x Tascam Zoom recorders, one Boom stand, on Mic stand and 2x Boom Microphones.
Using Tascam Zoom recorders and Boom mics I was able to capture the audio of dialogue and atmosphere sounds (footsteps, creaks in floor and furniture etc)
One mic was set up to record the dialogue from our actor Philip who played the butler Bennet in a fixed position as he was mostly sat and a fixed mic can always be positioned out of frame close enough to him to gather the audio required as was done here. You can see this mic in front on the seated Actor.
Our Actor stood up in this picture, Andrew, who played Lord Tandum is more dynamic and thus a boom arm was chose to save time on setting up fixed microphones for each position.
The Tascams recorded audio around the -12 to -6 decibel level with some spikes in audio due to over pronunciation in parts of the dialogue, these spikes can be fixed in post production and shouldn't pose an issue.
Another couple of set ups I used I held the mic on the boom arm close but just off shot to capture some ambience of walking/ going through things on a desk.
This was a fun yet quite painful and awkward experience, getting stiff legs and an aching back from standing still wasn't great, however I feel the experience outweighed the pain. Sourcing a boom arm where the cable did not come out directly from the 'handle' and instead had a rounded bottom with the cable coming out a bit further up the handle could make them a lot more comfortable for the user.
Our first team production 'Launch Date' is coming soon.
