Rocket! yeah! Satellite of.. Death

Creating a short film for our university assessment, I have been given the role of not only Sound Designer but also Post Production Effects. A separate blog for the sound design section will be created as that will be it's own thing, this one is going to focus on my work in Photoshop and After Effects to create a rocket taking off video which is integral to our story as our main character is sent off in a rocket at the end.

I started with a rough freehand outline of a rocket shape and then used the pen tool to create smooth lines and shading details.

This is the original rocket. I gave it a look of very old sci fi as this would be fitting the time we have set our story in (1920s)

With additional shading using mainly the pen tool I made the rocket look more 3d and gave it additional details such as shadows and highlights really making it 'pop'

I sourced the back/foreground footage from youtube which is a free to use video of a field. Using After Effects I split the video into two sections so I could layer on the foreground giving the rocket a feeling of existing in that field. I used Gaussian blur to give an effect of blending into the field. The addition of about 80 instances of a pulsing circle was used to create the smoke and the fire was taken from a rocket video.

Upon reflection an easier way to organise my workflow would have been to consolidate all the smoke layers into two separate compositions making the work area look a lot better and possibly making things a bit easier when it came to selecting all of the left or right 'smoke' videos.

The Rocket sound will be added in post of the final edit
